The Bulgarian Environmental Partnership Foundation is organizing an international summit in Svishtov, Bulgaria, 28-29 August, 2009 at the site of the Belene nuclear power plant. The participants in the event will be members of the international partners to the joint project from Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. Additional guests will include representatives of the MN3 (Mediterranean No Nuclear Neighborhood) as well as other international organizations such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and CEE Bankwatch.
The format of the conference will be a series of lectures given by experts in the fields of nuclear energy, economic and impact assessment of NPP and alternatives to nuclear power followed by discussion time. Presentations given by different international partners and a final group conclusion that will later be used in the printed materials describing the outcomes will also be part of the conference day.
The conference goals are to discuss the role of nuclear power in the energy future of Europe considering the current economic environment. The second goal of the conference is to address the issue of alternatives to nuclear power and to evaluate the potential and perspectives for their development in the partner countries. Additionally, the project aims at drawing the attention of international organizations (public, private and non-governmental) towards the problematic re-launch of the construction of the Belene NPP.
