02.10.2008 | New, International Urban Spaces Project in Czech Republic and Slovakia
The Czech and Slovak Environmental Partnership foundations are working together with other key partners from the Central European region including the University of Vienna on a new three-year project focused on enhancing the attractiveness and quality of the urban environment. The Urban Spaces Project aims to develop new tools for planning and creating better public spaces in cities. High quality of parks, squares and other open places is essential for sustainability of cities. Project results will be based on exchange of existing experience and joint methodology work. New approach will be tested at dozen of pilot actions.
The program is based on the Public Spaces program experience of the Czech and Slovak Partnership Foundations. Public Spaces programs are designed to help people turn their public spaces into vital community places, with programs, uses, and people-friendly settings that build local value and serve community needs. The core value of the program is to involve citizens, local governments, businesses as well as NGOs not only in the planning processes but also in the reconstruction itself and into follow up care for the space. The programs address two main community needs: development and improvement of the community and the local environment and equally important, helping to create a public voice and encourage participation in public affairs.
