01.10.2008 | New Greenway Opens on the Danube in Bulgaria
A new Greenway was officially opened in the North-Western corner of Bulgaria near the borders of Romania and Serbia in the Danube River basin on September 20th. The approximately 30 kilometer Vidin-Albutin Monastery Greenway located about 200 kilometers from Sofia links the town of resort town of Vidin, of the oldest towns along the Bulgarian Danube bank, with the medieval cave monastery of Albutin. The stone monastery in the is cut out in the almost vertical rocks of the Albotin ridge.
The opening event was marked with folklore music, dances and tasting of traditional foods. For the first time several decades the road to the Albutin cave monastery was repaired and prepared for bicycle traffic complete with railing in and other safety precautions and the monastery itself was prepared to host tourists. 115 people visited the opening and participated in the bike tour along the new Greenway.
