01.10.2008 | European Mobility Week in Bulgaria
The Bulgarian Environmental Partnership Foundation and a local Sofia based NGO; Bike Evolution organized public events during European Mobility Week, September 16 - 22. This marked the sixth consecutive year that EMW has been celebrated in Bulgaria. Public events such as bicycle parades, competitions, test drives for new bicycles and others were organized in Sofia and five other towns on the Lower Danube. Along with these initiatives, participants tied bright yellow balloons to parked cars to symbolize the carbon emissions emitted by the motor vehicles. Over 1 800 people took part in the events.
In Sofia, during the entire European Mobility Week, activities took place; a cyclist census to gage the numbers of bikers in the city, competition between bicycles, cars and public transport to see which mode of transportation is the fastest between various destinations in the city and critical mass bike run in formal clothing. To mark European Car Free Day (September 22), which coincides with Bulgarian Independence Day approximately 200 cyclists took part in a critical mass bike ride in the streets of Sofia.
