24.06.2008 | Czech Republic: Students map unsafe areas around their schools

Through the Safe Routes to Schools projects, an initiative of the Sustainable Transport Program of the Czech Environmental Partnership, seven schools have submitted to transport engineers school maps created by children mapping the most unsafe areas around their schools. Based on these studies, transport engineers will create plans to transform these unsafe areas into pedestrian-friendly, safe spots for each school during summer holidays. Schools in
The towns of Pec, Prague - Smíchov, Prague - Kyje, Horka nad Moravou, Křtiná, Brno - Líšne and Tovačova completed the first part of the school projects within thise grant and technical assistance program, which aims to support and develop safe and healthy routes to schools. In the next phase, the plans will be commented on and finalized and then presented to representatives of individual municipalities, counties and the police of the Czech Republic. In this way, towns and counties receive expert materials for investment and planning procedures better guaranteeing that children can get to school safely.

The Mission of the Sustainable Transport Program is to share the most recent experience and approaches to sustainable mobility, initiate and support safety measures in transportation and mitigate negative impacts of transportation on environment and communities.
