Annotation

An old orchard open to the broad public is located in the northwest periphery of the city of Brezno, in Banisko. The locality is very popular and all age groups visit the place. In the area there are also several springs of drinking water; the cleanliness of the sites is maintained by the inhabitants themselves. The goal of this project is to preserve and and revitalise this historic orchard and its rare fruit trees (including extremely valuable regional varieties of apple and pear trees that are approximately 80 to 100 years old), thus creating a valuable genetic fund of these fruit species. Such regional varieties are resilient against most diseases common nowadays and have exceptional taste and health properties. According to dendrologists, some old trees can be properly revitalised and a part of the orchard can be restored by planting new fruit trees bearing original genetic properties. In realisation of all activities, volunteers – inhabitants of the city – will be involved under the guidance of an arborist. Volunteers will also learn how to take care of the orchard so it can be sustained for years to come.
